We've all seen these outside cooler/AC thingamabobs on '50s business coupes and the like. But how do they work? Does one simply fill them with ice? It's the only way that makes sense to me.

Swamp cooler...uses water evaporation to cool the air.

Yep - works using evaporative cooling. (see Wikipedia ) The Lane Motor Museum has one on display to see up close. If you're ever in Nashville - check it out.

Something I read quite recently, here on Jalopnik I think. There were clip-on coolers full of ice that people would sell or rent. I just can't remember the details.

Here's one hanging on a split window VW...photographed at a recent VW show here in Mayberry. The car was covered in period accessories...very cool.
